If you know all about the UK, US, or Canadian immigration systems — but not your own — it might be time to pay attention to Nigeria’s updated rules.

From fully digital visa applications to steep penalties for overstaying, the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) is modernising its entire border process. And yes — even you, the returning “Japa” diaspora, need to be aware of these new systems.

Here’s what’s changed — and why it matters.

1. e-Visas Are Now Standard

Gone are the days of sorting things out at the airport. All travellers coming to Nigeria — whether for business, tourism, or work — must apply for their visa online before they fly.

Note: The #e-Visa portal is now the official channel. No more “on-arrival” gambling unless you fall under a specific exemption.

2. Visa-On-Arrival Still Exists — But Only for a Few

This option is limited to African Union delegates, frequent business travellers, and select officials. If you don’t fall into these categories, don’t assume you’ll be granted entry without an e-Visa.

3. Digital Landing Cards Are Mandatory — for Non-Nigerians

All foreigners must fill out a digital arrival/departure card before travel. This form generates a QR code scanned on arrival at Nigerian airports.

Nigerian passport holders are exempt from this requirement.

4. Dual Citizens Must Use Their Nigerian Passport

Holding a second nationality? Great. But if you also have a Nigerian passport, you must use it to enter and exit Nigeria. Trying to enter as a “foreigner” can lead to denial of entry.

5. Amnesty for Overstayers — Until 30 September 2025

If your Nigerian visa, CERPAC, or residence permit has expired, you now have a rare chance to fix it without penalty.

But the amnesty window closes on September 30, 2025. After that, the consequences are steep.

6. From 1 October 2025, the Penalties Are Serious
• $15 per day of overstay
• 3+ months overstay = 5-year ban
• 1+ year = possible 10-year or permanent ban

The NIS now tracks this digitally. No more slipping through the cracks.

7. Coming to Work or Stay Long-Term? Apply Right

Depending on your purpose, apply for the correct permit, such as:
• Temporary Work Permit (TWP)
• Subject to Regularisation Visa (STR)
• CERPAC (Combined Expatriate Residence Permit and Aliens Card)

All of these now include QR codes for digital tracking and are managed online.

8. Your Sponsor Must Sign for You

Whether you’re visiting family or taking a job, your sponsor in Nigeria must take formal responsibility for your:
• Accommodation
• Feeding
• Transport
• Repatriation if necessary

No valid sponsor = no valid visa.

9. No Cash Accepted for Immigration Payments

All immigration fees must be paid online via the NIS portal. Print your payment receipt and bring it when you travel — airlines and immigration officers now require it.

10. Nigerians in Diaspora, Don’t Slack
• Always travel with your Nigerian passport
• Digital landing forms are NOT for you
• Renew your passport before expiry
• Stay updated with changes — ignorance is no longer bliss
