A 36-year-old Nigerian man has been arrested in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, after allegedly stabbing his mother-in-law to death and seriously injuring his wife in what Canadian police have described as a case of intimate partner violence.
The suspect, identified as Lucky Ogbeijielele, was taken into custody by officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Service following a violent domestic incident at a residence on Lorne Street early Tuesday morning, July 2, 2025.
According to authorities, the incident appears to have unfolded in the presence of two young children, who were found inside the home uninjured but visibly shaken.
“Officers were dispatched shortly after 12:35 a.m. to a residence following reports of serious injuries sustained during a domestic altercation involving a couple,” said police in a statement.
When police arrived at the scene, they found a 32-year-old woman, believed to be the suspect’s wife, outside the home with serious but non-life-threatening stab wounds. She was immediately transported to hospital for treatment.
Inside the residence, officers discovered the body of a 63-year-old woman, who had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. She has been confirmed as the suspect’s mother-in-law.
Authorities said the couple’s two children were found unharmed inside the home and are now under protective care. Support services have been engaged to help them deal with the trauma.
Nigerian Community Reacts in Shock
News of the killing has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian-Canadian community, with many expressing sadness and concern over the rising visibility of intimate partner violence among immigrant families.
“This is heartbreaking. No family — Nigerian or otherwise — should experience this kind of horror,” said a spokesperson for a local African diaspora support group. “We need more conversations around mental health, conflict resolution, and cultural adjustment in new environments.”
Local authorities have also called for more education and resources to prevent domestic violence in newcomer and multicultural communities.
What Happens Next?
Ogbeijielele has been formally arrested and is expected to be charged with second-degree murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault. Police say the investigation is ongoing and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
The names of the victims have not been publicly released as next of kin notifications continue.
