A 36-year-old man has been arrested in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, in connection with a fatal domestic incident that left one woman dead and another seriously injured. The attack, which occurred early on Tuesday 2 July, is being investigated as a case of intimate partner violence.
Police were called to a residence on Lorne Street shortly after 12:30 a.m. following reports of a violent altercation. When officers from the Greater Sudbury Police Service arrived, they found a 32-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds outside the home. She was transported to hospital in serious but stable condition.
Inside the house, officers discovered the body of a 63-year-old woman, who had suffered multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities later confirmed the deceased as the mother-in-law of the suspect, while the injured woman is believed to be his wife.
The suspect, identified as Lucky Ogbeijielele, was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Police have confirmed that two children were present in the home at the time of the attack but were found physically unharmed. Support services have been engaged to provide care for the children, who are now under protective custody.
The Greater Sudbury Police described the incident as deeply disturbing and have appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist the ongoing investigation. Formal charges, including second-degree murder and attempted murder, are expected to be laid against the suspect.
Members of the local Nigerian and African diaspora communities have expressed grief and concern following the incident. Community leaders have called for increased awareness around domestic violence and better support systems for immigrant families navigating cultural and emotional challenges in new environments.
Authorities have not released the names of the victims as efforts continue to notify next of kin. Police have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat related to the incident.
