The harsh reality of migration has taken a heavy toll on many Nigerian families in the UK, but few stories are as emotionally wrenching as that of a Nigerian couple forced to return home after enduring the traumatic experience of losing their three children to social services.
In a heartfelt message shared on X (formerly Twitter), one Nigerian mother recounted how a series of unfortunate events completely altered the trajectory of her family’s life abroad.
Alongside another family with five children—twins under one year old still breastfeeding—both families were plunged into crisis when social services intervened, and the parents lost their jobs and were ordered to leave the UK within 60 days.
“We went through a tough time here in the UK,” she wrote. “Our three children were taken by social services. By the grace of God, they’ve been returned to us, but the trauma and instability made us realise that the best decision was to take them back to Nigeria for their wellbeing.”
Having sold their properties and invested everything into relocating abroad, the family’s relocation plans fell apart. Her career in the UK was also disrupted after her DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) record was affected, forcing her to stop working.
Now preparing to return to Nigeria within two months, the mother is urgently seeking opportunities to rebuild their lives. She holds a Master’s degree in International Business with Data Analytics and has experience in IT support, CRM systems, and data analysis.
Her immediate goal is to volunteer with a reputable organisation or IT firm in Abuja to gain hands-on experience and ease her transition back into the workforce.
“I’d truly appreciate any leads or support you can offer,” she added. “I’ll be residing in Abuja and ready to contribute to any organisation willing to give me a chance.”
Her story is a sobering reminder of the challenges faced by many Nigerians abroad—families that leave everything behind in search of better lives, only to find themselves fighting for survival in systems that often fail them.
As the family prepares to start from scratch, the call for community support, job referrals, and opportunities for reintegration back home is more urgent than ever.
If you know of any IT/data-related roles or volunteer openings in Abuja, please reach out or share this story. Let’s support our own.
