A 31-year-old Nigerian man, Adimabua Chukwuka, is facing a possible life sentence after being charged with the first-degree murder of a 60-year-old homeless man, Mario Ferreira, in Toronto, Canada.

Chukwuka was arrested last Friday by the Toronto Police Service’s 52 Division after a public tip-off. According to reports, Chukwuka allegedly attacked Ferreira without provocation, leading to the victim’s death.

Police responded to a call from the University of Toronto Campus Safety Special Constables on March 20 about an unconscious man near 144 College Street. Officers, firefighters, and paramedics arrived at the scene, but Ferreira was pronounced dead.

Detective Trevor Grieve reaffirmed the police department’s commitment to justice, urging anyone with information to come forward.

Security footage allegedly shows that around 5:20 a.m., the victim was lying on a bench at 6 Queen’s Park Crescent when Chukwuka armed himself with debris, possibly from a construction site or dumpster.

Grieve stated, “Without warning or provocation, the suspect approached Mr. Ferreira and violently assaulted him with the debris. He then fled the scene holding the weapon he used.”

Following the release of the suspect’s photo on March 21, Chukwuka was quickly identified, arrested, and charged with first-degree murder.

Under Section 235(1) of the Canadian Criminal Code, first-degree murder carries a mandatory life sentence. The law states:


If convicted, Chukwuka will face life imprisonment with no possibility of parole for at least 25 years.
