The UK government has announced a 7% increase in the standard application and renewal fees for passports, set to take effect from April 10, 2025. This move follows a similar hike last year and a 9% increase in 2023, driven by a significant rise in passport applications.

New Passport Fees
From April 2025, the cost for adult passport applications online will rise from £88.50 to £94.50. For children, the fee will increase from £69 to £74. Postal applications will also see a fee increase. Adults applying by post will face a £7 rise, from £100 to £107, while the fee for children will go from £69 to £74.

For those using the premium service (which processes passports within one day), the fee will increase as well. The adult premium service fee will rise from £207 to £222, while the children’s fee will jump from £176 to £189.

The Home Office assures that despite the annual fee hikes, it does not profit from the increases, as a substantial portion of the fees is allocated to production costs, including printing.

How to Avoid the Price Hike

If your passport is set to expire or become invalid for EU travel by November 25, 2025, or if you plan to travel abroad before then, it’s wise to renew your passport before April 9, 2025, to avoid the increased costs.

For those wishing to dodge extra charges, applying online is the most cost-effective option, as postal applications incur an additional £15 fee.

Additionally, British citizens living abroad are encouraged to apply within the UK, as overseas application fees are even higher—currently £108, which is £12.50 more than applying within the UK.
