The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) has stated that it will consider the concerns raised by Senator Natasha #Akpoti-Uduaghan regarding her suspension from the Nigerian Senate but will also hear from the other side before making any deliberations.
Senator Natasha, who attended the IPU meeting at the United Nations in New York, appealed to fellow parliamentarians for support, describing her suspension as unjust and illegal. She urged the international body to intervene and help her seek justice, arguing that her removal was politically motivated.
Responding to her appeal, the presiding officer of the IPU assured that due process would be followed. “As an institution, we will be taking the concerns that have been raised, not only taking her side but also giving a chance to listen to the other side as it is accustomed for IPU. After listening to the other side, we will take steps as necessary,” the official stated.
Senator Natasha’s suspension has sparked debate in Nigeria, with critics accusing Senate President Godswill Akpabio of using his position to silence opposition voices. Her removal from the Senate came amidst political tensions, raising concerns about democratic principles and fair representation in the country’s legislative process.
The IPU’s response signals a commitment to impartiality and due process, as it seeks to ensure fairness in parliamentary proceedings worldwide. The outcome of its deliberations could have significant implications for the independence of Nigeria’s legislative system.
