A senior university official, Professor Jennifer Watling of Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), has called on the government to scrap the rule preventing some international students from bringing their families to the UK.

The restriction, introduced in 2024 to curb migration, has led to a decline in overseas student admissions, affecting university funding. Despite this, the Labour government has stated it has no plans to lift the ban.

Prof. Watling emphasised that international students contribute cultural diversity and are crucial to university finances, as UK tuition fees are capped.

While domestic students will pay £9,535 per year from September, international students pay an average of £22,000 to £38,000 annually, making them a vital source of income for universities struggling with financial pressures.

There are over 51,000 international students in the north-west of England, and research by the Higher Education Policy Institute highlights their economic benefits. In Manchester alone, international students contribute £450 million to the local economy, equating to £3,500 per resident per cohort.

Despite the admission decline, the UK remains an attractive destination for international students due to its diverse environment and opportunities. #MMU student Margarida Vasconcelos said the multicultural atmosphere made her feel welcome and motivated her decision to study in Manchester.

A #HomeOffice spokesperson reaffirmed the UK government’s commitment to international students but stressed that reducing net migration remains a priority. With financial and cultural concerns mounting, universities continue to advocate for a policy change to support international students and sustain their institutions’ financial health.
