A Nigerian man, Olamilekan A (@lekside34), has shared his reflections on life in #Canada , seven years after leaving Nigeria with his young family, saying the move transformed their lives in ways he never thought possible.

Olamilekan recalled departing Nigeria on October 30, 2018, with his wife Temmi and their children, including their then 30-month-old son, Toluwalase.

On arrival at Toronto Airport, he was greeted warmly by an #immigration officer who, to his surprise, turned out to be Nigerian. “He smiled and said, welcome home,” Olamilekan recounted.

Today, the family has since grown with the birth of their daughter, Mofiyinfoluwa, and Olamilekan says looking back, he cannot imagine what life would have been like if they had stayed behind.

From a free school bus for his children each morning, to stable electricity, quality healthcare, life insurance, and a home of their own, he described the contrast with #Nigeria as “a world apart.” He added that he secured good employment without political connections, and the family can afford holidays abroad with ease.

“There is no way we would have achieved all we got now if we had stayed back believing Nigeria would be better,” he said, criticising political leaders who encourage citizens to keep faith while their own families are educated abroad.

Olamilekan also reflected on Nigeria’s political situation, reacting to President Bola Tinubu’s independence broadcast, which he described as misleading.

“Nigeria, as a country, kills dreams and wastes the most productive years of your youthful lives,” he wrote.

Still, he ended on a hopeful note, encouraging Nigerians aspiring to emigrate.

“My prayer is for those who dream and are earnestly looking for this opportunity. Your dreams are valid, and someday you will share the same story.”

His testimony adds to the growing voices of Nigerians in the diaspora who say migration has offered them security, stability, and opportunities they believe would have been difficult, if not impossible, back home.
