A young Nigerian, Ambassador Deborah Chidera Arikibe, has brought pride to the country by representing Nigeria at the 18th Asia Youth International Model United Nations (AYIMUN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

After nearly a decade of absence, Nigeria made a return to the United Nations Youth Forum stage through the participation of the 20-year-old youth leader and changemaker.

Representing Nigeria at the 18th Asia Youth International Model United Nations (MUN) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, #Arikibe carried the nation’s voice with a powerful call for sustainable tourism that balances cultural preservation with environmental protection.

Serving in the UN Tourism Council, she presented a position paper that underscored the need for developing countries like Nigeria to protect cultural heritage while embracing innovation in tourism. Her advocacy highlighted how tourism can serve as a tool for economic growth, cultural exchange, and environmental stewardship.

Nigeria last had representation at this forum in 2016, making Arikibe’s participation a significant milestone. Her presence not only marked the country’s re-entry but also showcased the role of Nigerian youth in shaping global policy conversations.

Speaking about her journey, Arikibe said her mission was to “reshape narratives about Nigeria and its youth” by demonstrating excellence, resilience, and leadership on the world stage.

Her contribution has been celebrated by colleagues, youth advocates, and the Nigerian diaspora, who see her representation as an inspiration for other young leaders. Many have also called on government, institutions, and the private sector to invest more in empowering Nigerian youth to engage in international platforms.

Arikibe, who has also led award-winning anti-racism campaigns in the UK and founded the DC RIKIS Foundation, says her work is only just beginning. Through her foundation, she continues to advance education, women’s empowerment, mental health, and leadership for disadvantaged youth both in Nigeria and abroad.

Nigeria’s return to the UN Youth Forum through Deborah Arikibe is more than a symbolic milestone — it is a reminder of the nation’s untapped potential when young voices are given the opportunity to lead globally.
