Ruth Elton, a figure of enduring devotion and service, passed away at the age of 91 in her home in Ilesa, Osun State, leaving behind a legacy that spans nearly nine decades in Nigeria.
Born in 1933 in England, Ruth arrived in Ilesa at just three years old in 1937, accompanying her parents who were committed to supporting the ministry of Apostle Joseph Ayo Babalola, the fiery preacher whose revival had transformed Yorubaland since 1930. Her father, Pastor Sydney G. Elton, known fondly as Pa Elton, devoted his life to teaching, mentoring, and guiding new converts, while Ruth grew up immersed in Nigerian language, culture, and community.
While she spent a brief period in England for vocational studies, Ruth’s heart and life remained rooted in Nigeria. By adulthood, she had charted a path of service that would define her legacy: improving health care, reducing maternal and infant mortality, teaching practical skills like sewing, and advocating against harmful traditional practices, earning her the Ebira title “Omotere,” meaning “the one who does good.”
Her work extended to communities across Egbe, Okene, Koton-Karfe, and other regions, where she quietly transformed lives, often at personal risk. Ruth was once attacked by robbers, yet she remained undeterred, continuing her mission of service and compassion.
In 1975, Ruth formally renounced her British citizenship, naturalising as a full Nigerian at a time when dual nationality was not recognised. She fully embraced her adopted homeland, living out her life as a devoted Nigerian citizen.
Ruth never married, nor did she seek personal accolades, yet her life became a testament to faith, courage, and belonging. On 7 September 2024, she celebrated her 90th birthday, surrounded by church leaders and admirers who recognised her quiet yet transformative contributions.
With her passing, Ruth Elton leaves behind a remarkable legacy, bridging cultures and generations, and marking the end of Ilesa’s once vibrant British missionary community. She will be laid to rest beside her parents in Ilesa, where her story of faith, service, and devotion began almost nine decades ago.
