Many Nigerians dream of securing a good job in the UK, but some fall victim to fake agencies issuing fraudulent Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS). Not only can this lead to losing money, but using a fake CoS could also result in a UK ban.

A #CertificateOfSponsorship is an electronic record issued by an authorised UK sponsor to a foreign worker. It’s essential for your work visa application, and its authenticity can make or break your UK career plans.

Here’s how to check if your CoS is genuine:

1. Verify the Sponsor’s Licence

Check if the issuing company is on the UK Home Office’s Register of Licensed Sponsors. The sponsor licence number is usually nine digits. Make sure the sponsor’s name and details match what’s on your CoS. Avoid sponsors whose licences are expired or revoked.

2. Check Your Personal Details

Confirm that your name, #passport number, and other personal information are accurate. Any mismatch is a red flag.

3. Inspect the #CoS Number

A valid CoS number is 11 characters and starts with “C”. If it doesn’t match this format, be cautious.

4. Look at the Expiry Date

For a defined CoS, the expiry date is normally three months and one day after the assignment date. If the date is unusually short (e.g., one or two months), it could be fake.

5. Match Job Dates and Details

Your job start and end dates should align with your offer letter. Skilled worker roles usually last 1–5 years. Shorter periods (like one or two months) are suspicious.

Also, check that the occupation code, job title, and pay meet the UK Home Office’s minimum standards and match your offer.

6. Contact the Sponsor Directly

Speak to the employer that issued your CoS. They can confirm its authenticity through their Sponsor Management System (SMS).

Tip: If you’re unsure about any detail, seek advice from an immigration lawyer before making payments or applying for a visa. Protecting yourself from fake CoS is key to a smooth and legal move to the UK.
