Nafisa Abdullah Aminu, who studies at the Nigerian Tulip International College in Yobe, outperformed over 20,000 students from 69 countries to emerge as the overall winner in one of the world’s most competitive English language contests for teens.
Her victory marks a significant achievement not just for her school and state, but also for Nigeria on the global academic stage.
"We are incredibly proud of Nafisa’s accomplishment,” said Hassan Salifu, a family representative. “This result is the outcome of her dedication, discipline, and the support she received from both her school and the Yobe State government.”
The competition tested various aspects of English communication, including comprehension, articulation, public speaking, and critical thinking—skills Nafisa demonstrated with distinction.
According to the Aminu family, this achievement reflects the ongoing transformation of the education sector in Yobe State. They credited Governor Mai Mala Buni’s administration with investing in youth development and providing a conducive learning environment through initiatives like the construction of modern schools and teacher capacity-building programmes.
Education advocates in the state have also pointed to the rollout of the STEMA Programme, which focuses on science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and arts, as a key driver of student success.
“Although this was a language competition, the broader reforms in education have equipped students like Nafisa with skills that transcend subjects,” said Abdulmumini Kolo Gulani, a Yobe-based education analyst.
Governor Buni has publicly congratulated Nafisa on her international win, describing it as a “testament to the potential of the state’s youth and the positive outcomes of sustained investment in education.”
Calls are now growing for both state and national recognition of Nafisa’s achievement, with community leaders and educators urging policymakers to celebrate and support academic excellence at all levels.
Nafisa’s success serves as a powerful reminder of what is possible when talent, opportunity, and support systems align. It is also likely to inspire many young Nigerians to pursue excellence and believe in their potential to thrive on global platforms.
