Schengen States (EU) To Introduce Biometric Border Checks: What Nigerian Visitors Should Know.

Starting in October, Nigerians travelling to Schengen countries like Germany, France, Italy, and Greece will need to adapt to a new border control process. The European Union is launching the Entry/Exit System (EES), a digital platform that will replace manual passport stamps with fingerprint and facial recognition technology.
The new system applies to all non-EU citizens, including Nigerians entering the Schengen Zone for short stays — whether for tourism, business, or visiting friends and family. Instead of a stamp on your passport, the EES will register your personal data, travel dates, and length of stay electronically.
Authorities say the EES will speed up border checks, reduce long queues, and help enforce visa rules more effectively. It’s part of a broader push to modernise immigration systems and improve security across European borders.
Travelers will not need to register in advance. The process happens automatically at border checkpoints — but expect to scan your fingerprints and have your face captured by a camera. This data will be stored for three years and shared with relevant immigration authorities across the EU.
If you’re planning to visit Europe after October, prepare for some changes at the airport. Arrive early, follow instructions at biometric gates, and ensure your documents are valid. Nigerian passport holders with valid #Schengen visas or visa-free status through residence permits will be subject to the new system.
