Almost everybody is talking about #Japa, but relocating isn’t for everyone. If you fall into any of these categories, sit down and think twice before booking that flight!
If It’s Just About Money!
Let’s be honest—if your only motivation for moving abroad is money, you might be disappointed.
Yes, there are opportunities, but life abroad isn’t a jackpot waiting for you at the airport. Bills are high, the economy is tight, and if you’re already doing well at home, think twice before you leave everything behind.
Reality Check: Abroad is not heaven. Don’t let social media deceive you.
If You Struggle With Being Alone!
Loneliness is real. It’s not just about missing family and friends—it’s the kind of solitude that can lead to depression.
Some people thrive in a new environment, but if you know you can’t handle isolation, be prepared. Even in a crowded city, it’s easy to feel alone when you have no support system.
Reality Check: Can you handle being your own best friend?
If Your Partner Is NOT on Board!
A lot of relationships have suffered because one person decided to relocate while the other wasn’t ready. If your partner isn’t in full agreement, don’t assume they’ll adjust later.
You will need their support, emotionally and mentally. If they’re hesitant, have the tough conversations now, before you find yourself struggling alone.
Reality Check: Migration is not just a physical move—it’s a life change that affects everyone involved.
If You Don’t Have a Solid Plan!
Coming in as a student? Make sure you have enough funds to survive before you land.
Coming for work? Ensure your job offer is real and sustainable—not just promises from “connects.”
Too many people arrive and start depending on cousin Shola, aunty Bisi, or Facebook friends—only to realize nobody has spare money to give.
Reality Check: If your survival plan is based on vibes and free couches, rethink your decision.
If You Hate Following Rules!
You see that “I go do am my way” attitude? Drop it before you even board that flight.
The UK and many other countries operate on strict rules. You can’t just do things anyhow and expect to get away with it.
Reality Check: If you struggle with rules, prepare for fines, legal trouble, or even deportation. No one has time for “I didn’t know.”
Final Advice: If You Move, Be Patient!
Relocating is not an instant success story. If things don’t go as planned, don’t start blaming bloggers or social media for “deceiving” you.
Nobody tied a rope around your neck—you made the choice. So, be patient, work hard, and adjust.
